Michael Kenna

Michael Kenna is a photographer, he was born in Widnes, England in 1953. During his first year at art school, he discovers in a photo development tray a photograph of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp taken by another student: that a mountain of shaving brushes.

The emotion is very strong for the young man whose first paternal memory is that of the father who shaves. It reappears in 1986, in France, during a visit of the former camp in Natzweiler which strongly marked him. Michael Kenna then decided to develop a personal project on the memory of the Deportation.

The exhibition

For more than 15 years, thanks to the sale of his other photographic prints, he undertook numerous trips to photograph the remains of the Nazi camps throughout Europe.

He who seeks to transform his emotion in memory, built step by step, photography after photography, a sober, intimate project, of which only his relatives are aware.
